HR : SELECTION

Don't Prejudge a person

Sun Tzu Says:
"A wise general considers both the advantages and disadvantages opened to him. When considering the advantages, he makes his plan feasible; when considering the disadvantages, he finds ways to extricate himself from the difficulties."

There is no such thing as a perfect person. Everyone comes with fair share of strengths and weaknesses. It is thus important not to prejudge a candidate. what matters would be how their strengths could be put to good use.

I would normally settle for her person who is available and whom i think could do the job well and have attributes like positive attitude, cheerfulness and commitment.

Some HR practitioners and bosses tend to be unduly obsessed with academic qualifications. Most tend to pass over a candidate for not having the right qualification though i once came across a man who dropped me because he resented my MBA with distinction. I learned about his resentment later because he told his colleague who happened to know me.

If you tend to begrudge candidates without the right qualifications, you should learn from the late Japanese industrialist, Matsushita Konosuke, who preferred to hire those with the right attitudes than those with the right qualifications. As he put it, he could always train the person with the right attitude instead of the other way around.
