HR : COMPENSATION
Quality life is important today
Sun Tzu says:
"Give attention to the well being of your men; do not exhaust them unnecessarily. keep their spirit united; conserve their energy."
Today's employees are no longer as dumb (or desperate) like those of my time. Yes, i was quite dumb those day because i would exhaust my self, working days and nights, sometimes six or seven days a week, until i suffered burnout as a result.
The catchword among job seekers today is "quality life by week" with opportunities for fun, development and career advancement. Companies like Motorola have shown their awareness of this trend, because in one of its job advertisement, Motorola declared: "Motorola says weekends are for families and friends too - yes, at Motorola, we believe that weekends are precious to you. So we strongly encourage you to spend your quality weekends with your family and friends. It's a balance between working life and family life which you will surely appreciate."
So you can forget about the image of the super - executive who works at his laptop while being chauffeured from office to airport, and then in flight, runs though air ports, rushes through three meetings, takes hundreds of calls and sees hundreds of people around the clock. No rest, no break for meals. Gee, who are you kidding?
Besides a five day work week, also consider giving more annual leave and how about remembering your staff's birthdays and letting them off on such days ? Your initiative will work wonders in motivating them.
